Which figure of merit (standard deviation or %RSD) is most appropriate for comparing precision of various techniques or pieces of equipment? Why?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

%RSD is more approproite based on the following facts

1) According to formula, it is standard deviation of data set divided by average of data set multiplied by 100 and expressed in percentage relative to its location.

2) It is more easier to interpret as expressed in percentage. So people can easily interpret the same in percentage than any other unit in which standard deviation may be expressed.

3) %RSD can be used to compare dissimilar results where the units are different

4) %RSD is the most appropriate tool of statistics to compare precision, provided that it must be used correctly.
