24. Which substance would be predicted to have the highest boiling point?

A) CH4

B) KI

C) CS2

D) HF

E) I2

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Boiling point of CH4 =  -161.5 °C

Boiling point of KI =  1,330 °C

Boiling point of CS2 =  46.3 °C

Boiling point of HF =  19.5 °C

Boiling point of I2 =  184.2 °C

Among all compounds, KI have highest boiling point. It can be easily predicted. Because KI is the only compound given here as ionic. generally Ionic compounds are higher melting and boiling point because of strong ionic interaction.
