For which of the following substances are the physical properties such as melting point and boiling point due to dispersion forces alone?

A. I2 B. CH2Cl2 C. NaH D. SO2 E. SiO

Please explain your answer

Answer #1

A. I2 --> this, since it will not form dipole-dipole interactions, or ionic-ionic. Only force is disperiosn forces

B. CH2Cl2 --> this is polar, therefore has dipole-dipole interactions + disperions forces.

C. NaH --> this is ionic, therefore do not expect only dispersion forces

D. SO2--> this is polar, therefore expect dipole-dipole interaction + disperions forces.

E. SiO --> this is nonpolar, but will produce crystal moleculars, therefore not an option
