Homework Answers

Answer #1

1st row:

pH = 10

[H3O+] = 10^-pH =10^-10 = 1*10^-10 M

[OH-] = 10^-14 / [H3O+] = 10^-14 / (10^-10) = 1*10^-4 M

since pH is more than 7, it is basic

2nd row:
[OH-] = 1*10^-5 M

[H3O+] = 10^-14 / [OH-] = 10^-14 / (1*10^-5) = 1*10^-9 M

pH = -log [H3O+] = -log (1*10^-9)= 9

since pH is more than 7, it is basic

3rd row:
[H3O+] = 1*10^-2 M

pH = -log [H3O+] = -log (1*10^-2)= 2

[OH-] = 10^-14 / [H3O+] = 10^-14 / (1*10^-2) = 1*10^-10 M

since pH is less than 7, it is acidic

4th row:

pH = 11.3

[H3O+] = 10^-pH =10^-11.3 = 5.01*10^-12 M

[OH-] = 10^-14 / [H3O+] = 10^-14 / (5.01*10^-12) = 2*10^-3 M

since pH is more than 7, it is basic
