If an organism could use sulphate as an electron acceptor, would it have more or less energy? Why?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Anaerobic respiration is the process by which cells that do not breathe oxygen liberate energy from fuel to power their life functions. Molecular oxygen is the most efficient electron acceptor for respiration due to its nucleus high affinity for electrons. Some organisms use other oxidisers to perform respiration without oxygen.

If an organism use sulphate as an electron acceptor , it have less energy . These organism use an electron transport chain to generate ATP from their fuel & extract less energy because their electron acceptors are weaker.

Why are these 2 statements false? Could anyone explain it? I. It takes less energy to add an electron to nitrogen than to carbon because nitrogen will be closer to achieving a noble gas configuration. II. It takes more energy to add an electron to fluorine than to oxygen because the radius of fluorine is smaller and more repulsion would occur in the p-orbitals.

Which is true about how are cells use oxygen? A. When oxygen is present pyruvate is converted to lactate which enters the citric acid cycle. The reduced coenzymes donate hydrogen ions and high energy electrons to the electron transport chain, and oxygen acts as the final acceptor of hydrogen ions and low energy electrons after the hydrogen ions have passed through ATP synthase. Why would an organism utilize alcohol fermentation if it is wasteful of the energy in food molecules and poses a threat of death due to high levels of toxic alcohol? A) The organism can survive short spells of anaerobic conditions and maintain growth and reproduction B) If glucose levels are not high, there may be time to eliminate the alcohol "waste" C) Fermentation can provide a rapid burst of ATP since it does not have to go through the full...
