Would the calculated molecular weight be too high, too low, or unaffected if the following occured? Explain
a) Some benzophenone adheres to the test tube walls above the solution.
b) Some unknown adheres to the test tube walls above the solution
c) The freezing point depression is calculated from super-cooled BZP
(1)
(a) If the some of the benzophenone adhere to the wall of the test tube then the quantity of the solvent will be decreased in the solution and according to equation (1) freezing point depression will be high and the calculated molecular weight will be low.
(2) If some of the unknown adhere to the wall of the test tube then the quantity of the unknown in the solution will be low which will result in low freezing point depression according to equation (1) and calculated molecular weight will be high.
(3) if the liquid is supercooled then freezing point depression will provide you no information. So there will be no effect on calculated molecular weight.
