A.) For the reaction I2(s) + Cl2(g) ? 2 ICl(g) ?H =36.0 kJ and ?S = 158.8 J/K at 25

Homework Answers

Answer #1

A. Given delta H = 36kJ covert it into Joules which will be 36000J, delta S = 158.8J/K#

As we know here T = 25degreeC which is 273+25 = 298K

So delta G = 36000 -298 (158.8) = -11322.4 J = -113.224kJ

Now we know that K = 4X 10^3

Also

R =8.314J K^-1 mol^-1

-11322.4 = -8.314 T In 4X 10^3

In 4000 = 8.29

1361.85 = T 8.29

T = 1361.85/8.29 = 164.27K

B.

Given K = 1.87X 10^-7 we can calculate delta G from it

delta G = -RTIn K

delta G = -8.314 X 2988 In 1.87X 10^-7

G = - 2477.572 X -15.49 = -38382.934 J

Now we know that

we value of delta G , T =298K , S =1.8192J/K

So -38382.934 = delta H -298(1.8192)

delta H = -38382.934 + 542.1216 = -37840.812J = -37.840812kJ

C.

For this use following eq.

T = 64.5 degree C covert Kelvin which will be equal 273+64.5 = 337.5K

delta H = 38kJ/mol convert to Joules = 38000J/mol

put both in above equation

delta S = 38000Jmol-1/337.5K = 112.59J/K mol
