Ammonium perchlorate, NH4ClO4, is the oxidizer used in the booster rockets of the space shuttle. The booster rocket engines are the two smaller engines positioned on either side of the space shuttle; the main rocket engine is the very large engine positioned under the shuttle.

When NH4ClO4 (s) decomposes thermally, the products of the reaction are N2(g), O2(g), H2O(g), and HCl(g). Write the balanced equation (including phases) for this reaction.

Express the answer as a chemical equation.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

We have to balance :

NH4ClO4 (s) --------> N2(g) + O2(g) + H2O(g) + HCl(g)

lets try to balance hydrogen atom first

NH4ClO4 (s) --------> N2(g) + O2(g) + H2O(g) + 2HCl(g)

chlorine

2NH4ClO4 (s) --------> N2(g) + O2(g) + H2O(g) + 2HCl(g)

oxygen

2NH4ClO4 (s) --------> N2(g) + 3O2(g) + 2H2O(g) + 2HCl(g)

nitrogen is already balanced

now see if atoms in reactant = atoms in products

no hydrogen is not balanced, balance it try without affecting Cl atoms

2NH4ClO4 (s) --------> N2(g) + 3O2(g) + 3H2O(g) + 2HCl(g)

oxygen again become unbalanced , balance it

2NH4ClO4 (s) --------> N2(g) + 5/2 O2(g) + 3H2O(g) + 2HCl(g)

multiply by to remove fraction in O2

4NH4ClO4 (s) --------> 2N2(g) + 5 O2(g) + 6H2O(g) + 4HCl(g)

now all the atoms seems balanced

this is required balanced chemical equation

The reusable booster rockets of the U.S. space shuttle use a mixture of aluminum and ammonium perchlorate for fuel. A possible equation for this reaction is 3 Al(s) + 3 NH4ClO4(s) → Al2O3(s) + AlCl3(s) + 3 NO(g) + 6 H2O(g). What mass of Al should be used in the fuel mixture for every kilogram of NH4ClO4?

Ammonium nitrate has been used as a high explosive because it is very unstable and decomposes into several gaseous substances. The heat from the decomposition reaction results in the rapid expansion of these gases (which include nitrogen, oxygen, and water) and produces the explosive force. Write the balanced chemical equation for this reaction: Calculate the mass of each gas that is produced if 125 grams of ammonium nitrate decomposes completely. Step 1: Convert 125 g of ammonium nitrate to moles....

NASA used canisters filled with lithium hydroxide to remove carbon dioxide inside the space shuttles. The chemical equation for the reaction is: 2LiOH(s)+CO2(g)=LiCO3(s)+H2O(g) a. Determine the theoretical mass of lithium hydroxide required for each 5.00 g of carbon dioxide removed from the shuttle. b. Theoretically, what mass of lithium carbonate, Li2CO3, would be produced for each 5.00 g of carbon dioxide removed from the shuttle?

Consider an internal combustion engine like that used in automobiles. The most common fuel used here is gasoline which is a mixture of hydrocarbons, and an octane rating is given for standardization. Therefore, we will approximate gasoline as being composed of the hydro- carbon, octane, C8H18. Another fuel that is common in racing applications is nitromethane, CH3NO2, used in top fuel dragsters. Let’s consider the combustion of each fuel with oxygen in an internal combustion engine. Let the 8-cylinder engine...
