4. Conformations of Cyclohexane
a. Using F models, construct the carbon skeleton for cyclohexane. Practice flipping the ring, then set the ring in a chair conformation. Place spheres on all equatorial positions and the axial position of C1. Draw the Newman projection formula using bonds C1 - C2 and C5 - C4. Be sure to include the spheres in the projection.
b. Flip the ring to the boat structure and redraw the Newman projection formula.
c. Cyclohexane is referred to as having chair/boat conformations and acyclics are referred to as having staggered/eclipsed conformations. Is there any relationship between chair/boat and staggered/eclipsed? Justify your answer.
