The pressure dependence of the replacement of chlorobenzene (PhCl) by piperidine in the complex [W(CO)4(PPh)] has been studied. The volume of activation is found to be + 11.3 cm 3 mol-1

What does this value suggest about the mechanism?

Answer #1

The pressure depedence of replacement of chlorobenzene by piperidine in the complex [W(CO)4(PPh)] gave a volume of activation of +11.2 cm^3.mol-1.

The +ve value for the volume of activaion suggests the reaction has a cyclic transition state during the displacement of the chlorobenzene by piperdine. Also the +ve value in pressure dependence suggests that the reaction is deaccelerated by pressure. If a -ve value would had been obtained that would have had suggested acceleration of reaction by pressure.

. A container has n = 3 moles of a monoatomic ideal gas at a temperature of 330 K and an initial pressure of three times the atmospheric pressure. The gas is taken through the following thermodynamic cycle: 1.- The gas is expanded isobarically (constant pressure) to Vf = 2.5∙Vi. 2.- The pressure of the gas is decreased isochorically (constant volume) to half of the initial value. 3.- The gas is compressed isobarically back to its initial volume. 4.- The...

If the experiment has been done correctly, you will have discovered that the density of water has a maximum value at a temperature of 4 °C. The density of water is often quoted as being 1.000 g cm-3 (or 1000 kg m-3) at this temperature. The density of ice at 0 °C is approximately 0.917 g cm-3 (or 917 kg m-3). An iceberg will therefore float because it is less dense than the fluid it is immersed in. Consider an...
