Student A has a percent recovery of 75% and student B has a recovery of 110%. Account for why neither of these students obtained results of exactly 100%. Give One (most likely) explanation for each student's results. Neither student spilled their material or took any from another student. Neither student used the balance incorrectly. Both students calculated their recovery correctly.
Solution :-
Student A has percent recovery 75 % which is less than 100 % (theoretical recovery)
The less recovery means that not all the compound is extracted or recovered from the mixture or solution. Therefore the possible error associated with lower recovery is may be student loss some of the compound in the filtration process or may be some of the compound remained in the solvent and does not recovered therefore the percent recovery is less than 100 %
Student B has percent recovery 110 % That means the mass of compound extracted is higher than actual mass used for the reaction or for the separation.
The possible error in the higher percent recovery is may be that the compound recovered is not dried well therefore the solvent remain the compound causes it to have higher mass than actual mass of compound which gives the percent recovery higher than 100 %.
