1) How does spectral bandpass affect instrumental light throughput?

1) How does spectral bandpass affect instrumental light throughput?

Answer #1

It is always recommend to use small width to avoid any polychromatic deviation durning the measurement of absorption spectrum, the smaller the width of slit smaller will be the bandpass. But if width is too small then signal to noise ratio decreases, and if our aim is to find the concentration then signal to noise ratio should be high so it becomes useful to increase the width of slit.

The Spectral throughput or power directly proportional to slit width therefore it may be conclude that spectral throughput is also directly proportional to the spectral bandpass.

1. A diffraction grating is used to separate the spectral lines of light, emanating from a gas discharge tube (e.g., a neon light), that is normally incident on the grating. On a screen placed 2.0 m from the grating, the third-order (m = 3) interference maximum for violet light (λ = 4.4 × 10−7 m) is found to be 0.20 cm farther from the location of the central maximum (m = 0) on the screen than the second-order maximum of...

White light is spread out into its spectral components by a diffraction grating. If the grating has 2055 lines per centimeter, at what angle does red light of wavelength 640 nm appear in first-order spectrum? (Assume that the light is incident normally on the grating.) °
