. Experimental Design: From the work you have done this semester, choose a topic and design an experiment you would be able to perform. In your design (1) state your hypothesis, (2) identify your dependent and (3) independent variables, (4) your control conditions and (5) describe your experimental procedure.

Answer #1

Experimental design

Distillation : (1) Separation of components in a mixture is possible by temperature of the mixture.

(2) Dependent variable is volume of disitllate

(3) Independent variable is temperature

(4) Control experiment would be when pure components are distilled separately at a fixed temperature

(5) Mixture is heated at a specific rate. Once it reaches the boiling point of first component it starts to distill out. Once the first fraction has come out, temperature increases again until the other fraction boiling point has reached where it is collected as a pure compound.

Design an experiment that verifies Ohm's Law. In other words, describe (in a sentence or two) how you would conduct such an experiment using the fixed resistor and variable voltage source. Identify your dependent and independent variables and sketch a plot with the independent variable on the x-axis and the dependent variable on the y-axis. Include axes labels and the slope term of the sketched plot and relate this to Ohm's Law.
