When 62.3 g of calcium is reacted with nitrogen gas, 25.2 g of calcium nitride is produced.
What is the percent yield of calcium nitride for this reaction?
3Ca(s)+N2(g)→Ca3N2(s)

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Number of moles of Ca = 62.3 g / 40.078 g/mol = 1.55 mole

from the balanced equation we can say that

3 mole of Ca produces 1 mole of calcium nitride so

1.55 mole of Ca will produce

= 1.55 mole of Ca *(1 mole of calcium nitride / 3 mole of Ca)

= 0.517 mole of calcium nitride is produced

1 mole of calcium nitride = 148.25 g

0.517 mole of calcium nitride = 76.6 g

Therefore, the theoretical yield of calcium nitride = 76.6 g

precent yield = (actual yield / theoretical yield)*100

percent yield = (25.2g / 76.6g)*100 = 32.9 %
