In an Organic Chemistry Lab we were doing the experiment for the preperation of Adipic Acid.

We mixed 50mL of H2O, cyclohexene (2mL, density = 0.81 g/cm3), and potassium permanganate (6g).

We got 1.19g of Adipic Acid.

How do I figure out percent yield and percent error? Please show all of the steps, work, and answers. Thank you

Answer #1

Percent Error =(|theoretical yield - actual yeild| / theoretical yield) * 100

cyclohexene --------------> Adipic Acid

M.wt.=82.143 g/mol           M.wt.=146.14 g/mol

wt.= 1.62 g                      theortical yield= 2.88 g

                                    actual yield= 1.19 g

Percent Error =(|2.88 g - 1.19 g| / 2.88 g) * 100

Percent Error = 58.68 %

We did an experiment in my organic chemistry lab. We converted maleic acid into a fumaric acid via an acid catalyzed, HCl, cis-trans alkene isomerization reaction. One of the post lab questions was: Fumaric acid is much less soluble in water than maleic acid. Could this be a driving force for the isomerization? Explain using LeChatelier’s principle.

Hello I have a question about organic chemistry 1 lab. When doing chemical tests the Br2 in CCl4. Shows a positive result for alkenes and alkynes? And negative test results mean a alkene and/or arene? I’m told in lab that we do not have potassium permanganate so we cannot use it. The second test that were told to preform if nothing else is shown on the IR is a halide test. I hope this makes sense. I’m just confused about...

For solventless hydrogenation Organic Chemistry Lab: A: The experiment title claims that this reaction is green because the reaction is solventless. Do you think the fact that we used hexane in the filtration invalidates this claim? How could we make this experiment more green? B: Assuming your yield is not 100%, where do you think the biggest losses occurred in this experiment?

we were doing acid-base extraction lab. The mixture included a base, an acid and a neutral organic compound. So at the end of lab we have to predict what is the organic compound. this organic compound was one of these: a) 4-chlorobenzophenone b) biphenyl c) trans-stilbene d) trans-chalcone in the solubility test, the organic compound dissolve in cold hexane and ethyl acetate. it did not dissolve in water and cold methanol, but it dissolve in hot methanol. can someone predict...

In my distillation experiment for organic chemistry lab, they had us find the average drop size (mL/drop) by taking our total volume collected and diving it by how many drops we observed. Now, in my lab report, I have to explain my data for this and its significance. I got 0.019 mL/drop for simple distillation and 0.01 mL/drop for fractional. What is the significance of this data?

This is an organic chemistry lab question.The experiment is on relative reactivities of some aromatic compounds. I'll give an overview of how what I did in the experiment and what i need help with. This might look like a lot but i really do need some help. I used 0.070ml of Anisole + 0.5ml of Glacial acetic acid. I added 1.00ml of bromine/hydrobromic acid. the mixture was heated for about 15 minuted (a moistened sodium disulfide wool apparatus was attached...

I have provided the information for the lab below. I want to see the chemical reactions that take place during each step of the experiment. So in the procedures when a chemical was added i would like to see what the products and byproducts that were formed. I also want to see one over all reaction for this experiment to just get an overview of what exactly is happening during the experiment. Thank you:) Part B: Synthesis of [Co(NH3)5Cl]Cl2 Objective:...
