write the formulas of the four acids in order of decreasing strength based on the rates at which they displace hydrogen when reacting with zinc. Record the pH below each formula. Acetic acid hydrochloric acid phosphoric acid sulfuric acid
Formulas:
Acetic acid = CH3COOH
hydrochloric acid = HCl
phosphoric acid = H3PO4
sulfuric acid = H2SO4
increasing strength:
HCl --> strongest, due to halide ioinzation H+ and Cl- pKa = -7
H2SO4 --> second storngest, due to SO4-2 poalrity will donate first H+ readily. pKa1 = -3 and pKa2 = 1.67
H3PO4 --> third storngest --> H3PO4 will ionizae into pKa1,2,3 = 2.1 / 7.2 / 12.3
finally
Aceetic acid, a molecular acid --> CH3COOH into CH3COO- has pKa = 4.75
Expect pH depends mostly on concentration but for a dilute solution expect pH <pKa overall
