Discuss the chemical princples and include the relevant chemical reactions for the folllowing test:

a. alkene

b. Alcohol

c. Carboxylic Acid

d. Aldehydes and ketones

Homework Answers

Answer #1

a. alkene is an unsaturated type molecule, having C=C and can be identified by KMnO4 solution. KMnO4 oxidize the double bond and gets decolorized.

b. Alcohol contains OH as funtional group and if it is phenolic the it gives FeCl3 positive (yellow color) test

c. Carboxylic acid contains COOH, acidic in nature and gives effervesence with NaHCO3.

d. Aldehydes and ketones having the C=O group gives hydrazone test with DNP, dinitrophenyl hydrazine, orange color.
