Which of the following has bonding that is ionic?

a. H2O

b. MgF2

c. CH4

d. H2

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The boding which results due to electrostatic interaction between oppositely charged ions. The bonding will be between a cation ( positively charged as they donate electron) and an anion ( negatively charged as they recieve electron). So here there is a complete transfer of electrons.

In covalent bonding there is no complete charge transfer. The electrons are shared between the atoms.

Here except MgF2 all the others are covalently bonded. Thus option (b) is the answer.
