Derive/explain the how thermal conductivity can be explained in terms of the kinetic theory of gasses.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

According to the Kinetic theory of gases,

The gas molecules travel randomly & they can colloid each other & on the walls of the container & they impact pressure on the walls of a container, of molecules or atoms moving at different velocities.During collisions they loose some amount of energy which heat up the ontainer so this is called thermal energy & the conductivity of the gas molecules is due to this thermal energy so it is known as thermal conductivity & the temperature of an ideal monatomic gas is proportional to the average kinetic energy of its atoms.

Experimental investigation determining the thermal conductivity for three different materials, silver painted zincalume, acrylic and black timber. Expected that zincalume would have the highest conductivity followed by acrylic and then timber (best insulator). Results found the opposites where timber had the highest conductivity (k= 0.317) then acrylic (k=0.307) and zincalume (k=0.303) How do I scientifically explain these results using the theory of heat transfer?
