If the distance from the origin to the middle of a spot is 3.8 cm and the distance from the middle of the same spot to the solvent front is 3.6 cm, what is the Rf for this compound?

Ans. Given,

I. Distance from origin to the center of spot = 3.8 cm

II. Distance from center of spot of solvent front = 3.6 cm

So,

Total distance between origin and solvent front = 3.8 cm + 3.6 cm = 7.4 cm

So, the distance travelled by solvent front from origin = 7.4 cm

Now,

Rf = Distanced travelled by the spot / Distance travelled by the solvent front

            Or, Rf = 3.8 cm / 7.4 cm

            Hence, Rf = 0.514
