Deseribe the physical phenomenion that takes place when we measure the refractive index of an orgianic liquid

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The measuring principle is based on the comparison of two
interferometric measurements of mirror displacements, one of which is performed in the liquid and the other one in the air.

Abbe's refractometer experiment or method is used to measure the refractive index of a given organic liquid. Using a particular monochromatic light source, the apparatus is calibrated with water as the liquid. Adjust the micrometre screw to focus the edge between the bright and dark regions. Adjust the refractometer scale to place the cross wire of the telescope exactly on the boundary between the bright and dark regions. Repeat the same process for different organic liquids after the equipment is calibrated.

A flat thin film of material of defined refractive index and thickness (n= 1.2, t = 800 nm) lies on top of a liquid (n=2.3) and is probed by an EM wave in the liquid. The other side of the film is exposed to air. What would be the minimum angle of incidence, in radians, that the incoming wave would need to have in order to enter the film but not pass through it?

Due to an unwanted oil spill, a thin film of oil of refractive index 1.40 floats on water (refractive index 1.33). When sunlight is incident at right angles to this film, the only colors that are absent from the reflected light are blue (458nm) and red (687nm). We measure inflation using the Consumer Price Index (CPI), but the CPI is an imperfect measure of prices because of three problems. Identify those three problems and discuss whether they overstate or understate the level of inflation in the economy. In your discussion, analyze how by deviating from the “typical consumer” that the CPI attempts to track affects the problems in the CPI.
