why is silver nitrate used to test for completeness of washing? Why is the precipitate washed?

Answer #1

In aqueous solution silver ion undergoes the folowing reaction

Ag+(aq) + Cl-(aq) = AgCl(s)

This formation of silver chloride precipitate is affected by an inorganic precipitating reagent such as silver nitrate.here silver nitrate is used to precipitate halide ions like chloride. An excess of silver ion is added so that the chloride concentration at equilibrium wil be negligible.

If u do not add silver nitrate during procedure, the precipitation will be incomplete, resulting in a substantial error and a low value for the percentage chlorine in sample.

When a solution containing silver ions is mixed with another solution containing chloride ions, a precipitate of silver chloride forms. When 85.00 ml of a silver nitrate solution is mixed with an excess of a sodium chloride solution, all of the silver ion is precipitated as silver chloride. The solid is collected, washed, dried, and found to have a mass of 6.5314 g. Calculate the molarity of the original silver nitrate solution.
