Determine the number of moles of ATP that can be generated from the fatty acids in 1 mole of steatic acid (18C).

Homework Answers

Answer #1
18 carbon FA yeilds 9 acetyl coA..
each time it produces acetyl coA.. it gives 1NADH and 1FADH2 = 5ATP so total 8 x 5= 40

each acetyl coA gives 12 ATP so total 12 x 9= 108

108+40 = 148
FA needs two high energy bonds to convert to fattyacyl coA initially

so 148-2 = 146

1. Aspartate is metabolized to oxaloacetate, which we know via gluconeogenesis can be used to generate PEP. Assuming the PEP then proceeds to pyruvate and acetyl CoA and enters the citric acid cycle, how much ATP could be generated from the complete oxidation of Aspartate if we assume 1 NADH produces 3 ATP, 1 FADH2 produces 2 ATP, and GTP or ATP are equivalent (1GTP=1ATP). (Also ignore the “cost” of Nitrogen removal; don’t consider the urea cycle) 2. True or...

Under normal conditions, healthy heart cells (cardiac myocytes)prefer fatty acids as their fuel which ultimately results in energy being generated from oxidative phosphorylation through the electron transport chain. We will talk about how fatty acids are oxidatively metabolized in lecture 10. The condition ischemic cardiomyopathy is a result of narrowing of heart arteries which leads to decreased blood flow and a decrease in oxygen delivery to the muscle cells of the heart. In the ischemic heart, metabolism shifts from fatty...
