If you had a binary mixture and the component differed in boiling point by 60 degrees Celsius, what type of distillation would you use?

Answer #1

Fractional distillation will be the best method to seperate a binary mixture of compounds that have difference in their boiling point by 60 degrees Celsius .

The process involves heating the mixture at a temperature , where one of the component ( having lesser boiling point) attains its boiling point and gets vapourised . The vapours are condensed and then collected leaving behind the other component ( having higher boiling point ) in the distillation flask itself .

This way these components can be seperated efficiently.

(5) The boiling point of limonene is 176 ºC. You purified it by steam distillation, which allowed isolation at lower temperature. Why was this successful (hint - look up the term "azeotrope")? (6) Another possible method of purification would be column chromatography. Compare the structure of limonene to that of biphenyl (experiment 3). What solvent mixture would you use to purify limonene by column chromatography?
