Efficiency () = Work done/Heat input = (QH-QC)/QH where QH is the heat extracted from the high temperature heat reservoir into the system and QC = heat rejected from the system to the low temperature sink
Carnot heat engine (following carnot cycle) exhibits maximum efficiency since it involves extraction of hear at maximum temperature, conversion of heat into work and rejection of remaining residual heat into the sink at lowest temperature.
Therefore efficiency of a carnot engine (c) = (TH-TC)/TH = 1- (TC/TH), where TH is the temperature of heat reservoir from which QH heat has been extracted, TC is the temperature of the sink where QC heat is rejected from the system.
Thus, efficiency of carnot engine represents the upper limit of efficiency that can be achieved by any engine (internal combustion engine).
