identify the disaccharide that fits the description: 1. not a reducing sugar 2. composed of two glucose units 3. ordinary table sugar 4. hydrolysis gives glucose and galactose

Homework Answers

Answer #1

1. not a reducing sugar: Sucrose also called as table sugar is made of D-Glucose and D-fructose. It is a non reducing sugar as it has acetal units.

2. composed of two glucose units: Cellobiose is composed of two D-glucose units and belongs to the reducing sugars as it contains hemiacetal unit.

3. ordinary table sugar: As explaied in option 1.

4. hydrolysis gives glucose and galactose: Lactose (milk sugar) is made of D-glucose and D-galactose and hence, libertes these two units after hydrolysis.
