Write the ionization and hydrolysis reactions for the following salts. Indicate if each will be acidic, basic or neutral and also indicate the hydrolyzed ions. a) KNO2 b) NH4NO3 c) CH3NH3Cl d) NaClO2

Homework Answers

Answer #1

a) KNO2 ---------> K+ + No2- basic nature due to anionic hydrolysis.

No2- + H2o --------> HNo2 + OH-

b) NH4NO3 --------> NH4+ + NO3- acidic nature due to cationic hydrolysis

   NH4+ + H2O ---------> NH3 + H3O+

c) CH3NH3Cl ----------> CH3NH3+ + Cl- acidic nature due to cationic hydrolysis

CH3NH3+ + H2O --------> CH3NH2 + H3O+

d) NaClO2 -------> Na+ +ClO2- basic nature due to anionic hydrolysis.

ClO2- + H2O ----------> HClO2 + OH-
