Always looking for new ways to start a fire, Amanda discovers that potassium chlorate, sucrose, and sulfuric acid react to form a fire. The first step in this process is the production of heat from the reaction of sulfuric acid with the sucrose. This heat provides the energy necessary for potassium chlorate ro decompose. If 3 grams of potassium chlorate are used, how many grams of potassium chlorate will be prodced?

Answer #1

given m = 3 g of KClO3

find:

NOTE: I will assume you mean the thermal decomoposition of KClO3 to KCl... since the statement repeats production/consumption of potassium chlorate (which makes no sense)

so assume potassium chlorate ---> potassium chloride

2KClO3 --> 2KCl + 3O2

MW of KClO3 = 122.55 g/mol

mol of KClO3 = mass/MW = 3/122.55 = 0.0244 mol of KClO3

ratio is

2 mol of KClO3 per 2 mol of KCl

so

0.0244mol of KClO# --< 0.0244 mol of KCl

MW of KCl = 74.5513 g/mol

mass of KCl = mol*MW = 0.0244*74.5513 = 1.819 g
