A block of ice measuring 0.5 cubic foot is taken from the freezer where it was stored at -12F. How many Btu of heat will be required to convert the ice to water at 130F

Homework Answers

Answer #1

volume of ice = 0.5 cubic foot = 14.16 L

mass of ice = d*v = 14.16*10^3*1 = 1.416*10^4 g

initial temperature = T1 = -12 F = -24.4 C

final temperature = 54.44 C

DHfus of water = 6.01 kj/mol

heat required(q) = mice*sice*DT1+n*DHfus+mwater*swater*DT2

                  = 1.416*10^4*2.108*(0--24.4)+(1.416*10^4/18)*6.01*10^3+1.416*10^4*4.184*(54.44-0)

                  = 8681.51 kj

                  = 8228.5 Btu
