1. Explain why a titration can be used to determine the percent by mass of acetic acid in the vinegar and the molecular mass of an unknown acid?

2. Why would it be important to know the molecular mass of an unknown acid in the experiment?

Answer #1

Q1.

we can relate via --> base/acid titration

if we know how much moles of titrant we added, then we can relate stoichoimetrically

i.e.

1 mol of base = 1 mol of acid

and we know that for mass %

mass of acid % = mass of acid / Total mass * 100%

total mass = mass of solution

mass of acid = mol of acid * MW of acid

that's why we need Molar Weight of Acid

so

we need:

- Volume of titrat --> relate to moles of acid

- Molar Weight of acid --> change to mass

- Calcualte % mass

Skills Review: Titration Objective: Determine the concetration of an acid by mas percent and by molarity. Summary You will perform four titrations to brush up on titration skills. The analytes used in the experiment are commercial vinegar and hydrochloric acid. The titrant used for all titrations is sodium hydroxide. The indicators used to find the endpoint of the titrations are methyl red and phenolphthalein. A food chemist determines the concentration of acetic acid in a sample of apple vinegar by acid-base titration. The density of the sample is 1.01 g/mL. The titrant is 1.022 M NaOH. The average volume of titrant required to titrate 25.00 mL subsamples of the vinegar is 20.78 mL. What is the concentration of acetic acid in the vinegar? 1)Sodium hydroxide cannot be used to prepare a primary standard titration solution because the compound is not available in high purity. The most common impurity is water because sodium hydroxide is hygroscopic meaning it absorbs water from the air. a)If sodium hydroxide that had aborbed water was used directly to prepare a standard solution how would the actual concentration differ from the presumed concentration?
