Give the formula of a single reagent that will separate the following pairs in one step.

a. ZnS and CoS (solids)

b. Ni2+ and Fe3+ (solutions)

c. Fe(OH)3 and Zn(OH)2 (solids)

d. AgNO3 and Ni(NO3)2 (solutions)

Homework Answers

Answer #1

a) Conc. HCl

ZnS is a white solid soluble in Conc. HCl but CoS is a black solid insoluble in Conc. HCl but soluble in aqua regia.

b) either potassium thiocyanate or dimethylglyoxime

With potassium thiocyanate only Fe+3 gives a blood red coloration.

With dimethylglyoxime only Ni+2 gives rosy red precipitate.

c) Addition of excess of NaOH

On adding excess of NaOH, only Zn(OH)2 disolves as soluble sodium zincate Na2ZnO2 while ferric hydroxide remains insoluble.

d) Addition of sodium chloride

all siver will be precipitated as AgCl while NICl2 is soluble in water.
