Determine the final volume (mL) for each of the following:

(express your answer with the appropriate units.)

a) Diluting 35.0 mL of a 10.5 M NH4Cl solution to give a 4.00 M NH4Cl solution.

b) Diluting 18.0 mL of a 15.5 M NaNO3 solution to give a 3.50 M NaNO3 solution.

c) Diluting 2.50 mL of an 17.5 M H2SO4 solution to give a 1.50 M H2SO4 solution.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

from dilution formula : M1V1 = M2V2

a) M1 = 10.5 M , V1 = 35 ml

     M2 = 4 M ,      V2 = ?

   35*10.5 = 4*V2

V2 = final volume = 91.875 ml

b)

from dilution formula : M1V1 = M2V2

M1 = 15.5 M , V1 = 18 ml

   M2 = 3.5 M ,      V2 = ?

   15.5*18 = 3.5*V2

V2 = final volume = 79.71 ml

c)

from dilution formula : M1V1 = M2V2

a) M1 = 17.5 M , V1 = 2.5ml

     M2 = 1.5 M ,      V2 = ?

   17.5*2.5 = 1.5*V2

V2 = final volume = 29.16 ml
