Question

what effect does increasing the temperature have on the equilibrium vapor pressure of a liquid

what effect does increasing the temperature have on the equilibrium vapor pressure of a liquid

Homework Answers

Answer #1

vapour pressure increases with increases in temperature

explanation :

we know that this principle is used in pressure cooker

As the temperature increases, the vapor pressure increases as well. This is due to the fact that as temperature increases, the motion of the molecules increases. As a liquid has more molecules than a gas at the same pressure, the increase in motion caused the molecules to generally leave the liquid and enter the gas, similarly to diffusion. As there are more molecules in the gas, the pressure increases.

According to the ideal gas law, PV/T=constant . as the temperature increases, so does the product of the volume and the pressure. As the volume doesn't change in this , the pressure must increase with the temperature. Therefore, due to the increase in tempersture the vapor pressure of a liquid increases due to increasing temperature.
