why does 6g orbital exsist?

why does 6g orbital exsist?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Existance of orbitals can be explained by using two quantum numbers n and l.

Principal quantum number indicates the energy of the shell. It is denoted by n and it will have values 1,2,3,4 ...........

Azimuthal quantum number represents the shape of orbital (subshell) and it will have values from 0 to n-1 in particular nth shell. l values for subshell are shown below

If l =0 subshell = s

If l =1 subshell = p

If l =2 subshell = d

If l =3 subshell = f

If l =4 subshell = g

If l =5 subshell = h

If l =6 subshell = i

6g means shell number or principal quantum number n = 6

for n = 6 possible l values are 0 to n-1, they are l = 0,1,2,3,4,5

Shbshells exist in 6th shell are 6s (for l=0), 6p (for l =1), 6d (for l =2), 6f (for l =3), 6g (for l =4), 6h (for l =5)

Hence 6g exists in 6th shell.
