What gas reacts with SO2 (sulfur dioxide) to form H2S2O7 (Disulfuric Acid)?

What gas reacts with SO2 (sulfur dioxide) to form H2S2O7 (Disulfuric Acid)?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

In industries general preparation method of oleum is as follows:

First step : combining of Sulfur and oxygen to form SO2 gas.

Second step : SO2 is converted to SO3 by reacting with O2 in presence of V2O5 catalyst under 450 0C and 1-2 atm pressure.

Third step : SO3 formed is added to H2SO4 to form Oleum(H2S2O7 (Disulfuric Acid).

Fourth step : The formed oleum then is added to water to form H2SO4, which is highly concentrated.

Answer : The gas that reacts with SO2 is O2.

When coal is burned, the sulfur it contains is converted into sulfur dioxide. This SO2 is a serious pollutant, so it needs to be removed before it escapes from the stack of a coal fired plant. One way to remove the SO2 is to add limestone, which contains calcium carbonate, CaCO3, to the coal before it is burned. The heat of the burning coal converts the CaCO3 to calcium oxide, CaO. The calcium oxide reacts with the sulfur dioxide in...

Sulfur dioxide is a toxic gas that is admitted into the atmosphere from volcanic irruption's as well as from human activities such as coal burning. Sulfur dioxide canreact with water in the atmosphere to form sulfuric acid, a key component in acid rain. To prevent acid rain, coal plants are required by the US EPA to clean the sulfur dioxide from there emmissions using lime (CaO) according to the following reaction: CaO(s)+SO2(g)-->CaSO3(s) If a power plant emmits 10,000 L of...
