In the process of recrystallization, after dissolving the product in hot methanol, why do we have to add water to the boiling solution until a slight cloudiness develops?

Answer #1

Sometimes we are not able to crystallize the compounds with single solvent so we use mixture of solvents for recrystallization.

So we must have chosen methanol as one solvent as the solubility of the compound is better in it as compared to water. So the compound is dissolved in hot methanol. When water is added to it the solubility of solute decreases in the mixture so it causes insolubility of solute.

so when the cloudiness appears we can recrysattalize the compound.

Here we have to choose two solvents which are miscible in each other.

We have a Carnot engine operating between a hot reservoir A and a cold reservoir B. The work produced in the engine is used to power a flywheel. The hot reservoir is boiling water at p0 = 1 bar and Ta = 373K. The cold reservoir is a block of ice at p0 and Tb = 273K (latent heat = 3.3E5 J/kg). For the flywheel we know that Inertiamoment = 2kg m^2, mass = 6kg, c = 418J/kg K. Final...

In LUMINOL SYNTHESIS, why is hot water added after mixture is cooled to 100 degrees C.? "Allow the solution to reach a temperature of ~190 o C and start a timer. The temperature of the reaction must be held between 190-200 o C for two minutes to obtain optimum yield. (Put one person in charge of carefully monitoring the time and temperature.) The easiest way to achieve this is to partially remove the test tube from the sand-bath when the...

After a synthesis, a student obtains 1.0 g of crude and impure product. In an attempt to purify the crude material, the student dissolved the aforementioned 3.0 mg into the minimum amount of recrystallization solvent necessary at 25°C.   Next, the student cooled the flash containing the mixture in an ice-water bath for 15min while scraping the inside of the flask with a glass stir rod until no more crystal formation was observed. Question about mixed solvents for recrystallization. I am having a hard time conceptualizing how a mixed solvent would work in a scenario where P and O nitronitroacetanilide are recrystallized with a small amount of hot Ethanol followed by a larger volume of water. From the structure of the molecules I assumed that the Para form of nitroacetanilide is more polar than the Ortho form. Second, I know that water>ethanol for polarity. Finally, I know that water and ethanol can hydrogen...

When using 3 grams of benzoin to oxidize to benzil, calculate the theoretical yield. Procedure: 2 boiling stones are added to a 400-mL beaker half-full of water, then placed on a hot plate to boil. 3 grams of benzoin and 7 mL of concentrated nitric acid are then added to a 125 mL Erlenmeyer flask and placed in the boiling water bath and left to boil until the evolution of nitrogen dioxide has ceased. Then, 50 mL of ice-cold water...
