Would trituration or recrystallization be a more effective method to purify synthesized guaifenesin?

Would trituration or recrystallization be a more effective method to purify synthesized guaifenesin?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Recrystallization would be a very more effective method than the trituration method for the purification of synthesized Guaifenesin. This is because all the impurities trapped in the crystal in the trace amount could not be removed through the trituration technique because in this method, the synthesized compound is not dissolved in the solvent while in recrystallization technique, the synthesized compound is recrystallized by completely dissolving in the pure solvent or mixture of solvent.

You purify two colorless solids (2 and 3) by recrystallization. Both have a melting point range of 102-104 °C. You forgot to label your work, so you are not sure which solid is 2 and which is 3. You have a small amount of an authentic sample of pure 2 available in your lab. How can you identify the unknowns?

A teacher wishes to test whether or not the case method of teaching is more effective than the traditional method. She picks two classes of approximately equal intelligence. She gathers a sample of 18 students to whom she uses the case method and another sample of 14 students to whom she uses traditional method. After the experiment an objective test revealed that the first sample got a mean score of 28.6 with standard deviation of 5.9 , while the second...
