Using your density calculations, what is the percent composition of copper in the penny?

Density of copper = 8.96 g/mL

Density of zinc = 7.13 g/mL

Density of penny = 2.5728 g/mL

Homework Answers

Answer #1

if x is the percentage of copper presenting in the penny

then 1-x percentage zince presenting in penny

so total density of penny = density of copper* percentage of copper + density of zinc*percentage of zinc in penny

2.5728 g/ml = (8.96 g/mL*x)+(7.13 g/ml*(1-x))

x = -2.49 , percentage compostion is coming in negatives that means density of the penny given is wrong or not in the range it would be around 8 g/ml not 2.5728 g/ml .

please check density and substitute in place of density of penny you will get correct answer.

Penny Sandwiches From 1864 until 1983, the usual composition of a penny (its actual name is "cent") was 95% copper and 5% zinc and tin. Because of the increasing costs of copper, pennies are now composed of zinc interior with a thin copper coating comprising only 2.4% of the penny. This activity allows you to remove the inside of the penny, leaving only the thin copper coating. Materials 2 pennies (dated 1983 or later) file or coarse sandpaper 2 cups...

The zinc within a copper-plated penny will dissolve in hydrochloric acid if the copper coating is filed down in several spots (so that the hydrochloric acid can get to the zinc). The reaction between the acid and the zinc is as follows: 2H+(aq)+Zn(s)→H2(g)+Zn2+(aq). When the zinc in a certain penny dissolves, the total volume of gas collected over water at 25 ∘C was 0.959 L at a total pressure of 752 mmHg. What mass of hydrogen gas was collected?

A student determines the composition of a copper chloride by the procedures of this experiment. Tell whether each of the situations described below would cause the student’s experimental value for the percentage of copper in the compound to be greater than, less than, or unchanged from the theoretical value. Explain your reasoning in each case. a. The student does not add enough hydrochloric acid and some unreacted zinc remains trapped inside the copper metal. b. The student is in a...

A 0.4858 g sample of pewter, containing tin, lead, copper, and zinc, was dissolved in acid. Tin was precipitated as SnO2·4H2O and removed by filtration. The resulting filtrate and washings were diluted to a total volume of 200.0 mL. A 15.00 mL aliquot of this solution was buffered, and titration of the lead, copper, and zinc in solution required 35.85 mL of 0.001523 M EDTA. Thiosulfate was used to mask the copper in a second 20.00 mL aliquot. Titration of...

A materials scientist has created an alloy containing aluminum, copper, and zinc, and wants to determine the percent composition of the alloy. The scientist takes a 12.921 g sample of the alloy and reacts it with concentrated HCl. The reaction converts all of the aluminum and zinc in the alloy to aluminum chloride and zinc chloride in addition to producing hydrogen gas. The copper does not react with the HCl. Upon completion of the reaction, a total of 10.5 L...
