How does the desalination microbial fuel cell (MFC) work to produce less salty water?
Using the MFC desalination of water can be done without electrical energy input or using high pressure. Here only organic matter is used as the fuel to desalinate water.
In this cell two membranes are placed between the anode and cathode, in between membranes water is placed. An anion exchange membrane was placed adjacent to anode and a cation exchange membrane is placed next to the cathode. If current is produced by bacteria on the anode, ionic species in the water are transferred into the two electrode chambers then water is desalinated.
