Question

what is a valence electron

what is a valence electron

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Valance electrons outer shell electrons. If outer shell is closed the element is chemically innert and if outer shell is not closed the element is chemically active.

What is valence electrons determined by how much electrons are needed to completely or partly fill the outer shell.

Examples

Sodium(Na)

electronic configuration : 1s2,2s2, 2p6 , 3s1

outer shell : 3s

number of valence electron = 1

Calcium(Ca)

electronic configuration : 1s2, 2s2, 2p6 , 3s2

outer shell : 3s

number of valance electron : 2
