ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY:

Which of the following solutions would you expect the to be more affected by stray light when determining it’s concentration by absorbance spectrophotometry, and why? Give an equation for transmittance to support the answer. Solution A: 0.089 M Ce4+ Solution B: 0.123 M Ce 4+

Answer #1

Let us answer this question based on Beer -Lambert's law. That is log I0/I = cl = A

Where A is the absorbance

is the molar absorptivity coefficient

c is the concentration

l - path length of solution(thickness of solution)

I0/I = intensity of incident radiation / transmitted

Now, we can say that if the concentration is more, then absorbance should be greater; because they are directly proportional.

So solution with 0.123 M will affect more by stray of light.
