Alumina is a strongly polar compound and so is water, So the bond interactions between them are the formation of hydrogen bond and dipole-dipole attractions . Water is used as an eluent in column chromatography with alumina as adsorbent to separate a highly polar component in the solvent

As alumina is a polar compound and ethanol is a non-polar compound the only interaction between them is the Vander Wal's dispersion forces.Ethanol is used as an eluent in column chromatography with alumina as adsorbent to separate a non-polar or covalent component in the solvent.
