I want to perform a reaction in lab using 2,4-dimethyl-3-pentanol as a starting material and Lucas Reagent (1:1 ZnCl2 to HCl 12M) . I am thinking about heating under reflux and using the separatory funnel but I do not know where to go from there and put this together.
Take the starting material in a 2-neck round bottom flask fitted with a condesner and add the Lucas reagent into it. Heat the reaction mixture to reflux for an hour and check the TLC for completetion of the reaction. If the starting material is totally consumed then stop the heating and bring it to room temperature.
Quench the reaction by adding some cold water. Extract the organic mass using diethyl ether (3x50ml), after taking the whole mass in separatory funnel and separating the layer. The product will be in the ether layer, which is the upper layer. Removal of ether will give the product.
