Which of the following substances exhibit hydrogen bonding in the liquid state?

PH3

H2O

H2S

CH4

He

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Solution: H2O

Only H2O posses hydrogen bonding in liquid state. Here, due to high electronegativity of oxygen, the hydrogen attached to this oxygen forms hydrogen bonds with oxygen present on other water molecule.

A hydrogen bond is formed between electronegative atom and hydrogen attached to heteroatoms.

PH3 do not posses hydrogen bonding due to less electronegativity of phosporous.

H2S does not exhibits hydrogen bonding in liquid state.

CH4 is nonpolar molecule, hence does not contains hydrogen bonds.

He atoms are combined togather by weak dispersion forces.

He
