what is the bin-1 gene? how does it relate to Alzheimer's disease?
Bin-1 gene is a type of gene that contains the code for formation of a particular protein named as MYC Box-dependent-interacting protein 1, also known as Binding-Intgrator 1 protein. This protein is responsible for regulation of endocytosis in muscle cells and apoptosis in the nervous system. It acts through regulating membrane structure and function, sorting of the intercellular vescicles and controls cell profiferation that reduces the chances of tumour formation.
Higher expression of Bin-1 gene is found to be associated with the increased suceptibility to Alzheimer's diseases. Though the mechanism is clearly not found yet, but it is thought that the Bin-1 gene somehow may regulate the Tau pathway possibly by regulating the oligomer formation.
