A true breeding tall purple pea plant is crossed with a true breeding short white pea plant. Purple and tall are dominant. What is the genotype and phenotype of the F1 offspring. If two of the F1 offspring are crossed, what will be the phenotypes and genotypes of the F2 offspring? A tall purple pea plant is crossed with a short white pea plant. What will the phenotype(s) and genotype(s) of the F1 offspring be?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

It is a dihybrid cross. Both follow complete dominance.

Phenotype is the observable traits. Ratio is --9tall purple:tall white3:short tall 3:white and short1---(9:3:3:1)

Genotypic ratio is--

Genetic constitution of an organism is called gentype and the ratio of the genotype is called genotypic ratio.

TtPp x ttpp------this corss gives 50% tall and purple and 50% short and white.

Mendel crossed a pure breeding tall pea plant having red flowers with a pure breeding short pea plant having white flowers. All the F1 plants were tall with red flowers. He then selfed the F1 plants and the F2 plants had new combination of traits. Using a punnet square, show the phenotypes and genotypes of the F2 plants.

When Mendel crossed pea plants that were true breeding for purple flowers (PP) with pea plants with white flowers (pp), all of the offspring had purple flowers.  When he let these offspring self-fertilize, he got purple and white second generation (F2) offspring in a phenotypic ratio of 3:1. But, we know that the genotypic ratio is really 1:2:1.  Why? (1 point)
