What do the somites become as the embryo develops?
Somites are formed by the division of paraxial mesoderm and are located on the side of the neural tube of a developing embryo. The first pair of somites originate from the anterior portion of trunk adjacent to notochord and the remaining then follows thereby budding mesoderm.
These cells act as precursors to the population of cells leading to rise of various structures in the body (as the embryo develops) such as skeletal muscles, tendons, cartilage, dermis, vertebrae, neural crest cells and axons of spinal nerves.
