My neighbor pruned some sprawling, leggy juniper back to older wood (below existing foliage) in an attempt to produce a more full plant. What was the result of his pruning? Why?
The result of pruning:
Pruning influences the direction in which a plant grows: Each time you make a cut, you stop growth in one direction and encourage it in another and encourage tha growth of the plant.
This result was seen because all the shoot tips on a plant compete with each other, so that tips both above and below can influence each other's growth. This allows the strongest branches to grow the most vigorously, wherever they may be on the plant.
