My neighbor pruned some sprawling, leggy juniper back to older wood (below existing foliage) in an attempt to produce a more full plant. What was there result of his pruning and why?
My neighbor pruned some sprawling, leggy juniper back to older wood in an attempt to produce a more full plant. Then growth of plant increase.
Pruning is necessary to promote good plant health, remove damaged limbs, encourage new growth and maintain shape.
This result was observed because all the shoot tips on a plant compete with each other, so that tips both above and below can influence each other's growth. This allows the strongest branches to grow the most vigorously, wherever they may be on the plant.
