In genetics locus is a specific fixed position on a chromosome where a particular gene or gene marker is located. The order list of loci for a a particular genome is called as gene map. Gene mapping is the process of identifying a specific locus responsible for particular phenotype or biological trait. Two types of gene mapping are

1) Genetic mapping

Linear description of genes and markers on a given chromosome with maekrrs closer being inherited together often.

2) Physical mapping

Location of genes on chromosomes using cytogenetics and physical methods.
